C.W. Jefferys' notes about this picture from The Picture Gallery of Canadian History Volume 3
The Rideau Canal was begun in 1826 upon the advice of the Duke of Wellington. The construction of the anal was assigned to Colonel John By and the Royal Engineers. The Parliament Buildings now occupy the height at the right.
